Nell will discuss that intersection of continuous delivery and big data, as well as the evolution of Etsy's data-driven product culture.

DevOps Culture And Practices To Create Flow

Delighting customers by through the fast flow of features into production depends, like other capabilities, on repetition and habit. In this talk, I present some observations on plant floor engineering and operations (the birthplace of Lean), and then derive the behaviors, rituals and processes that are essential to fast flow in software development. Some practices you’ll have heard of (e.g., continuous integration and delivery, TDD, etc.), and but some will be surprising and novel (e.g., the Improvement Kata). We’ll show how these practices are all interrelated, and how to institute them to create a culture of continuous learning leading to happy users, fast flow and fulfilled practitioners.

TestOps: Continuous Integration when Infrastructure is the Product

DevOps is a software development method that, among other things, involves automating the provisioning and configuration of IT infrastructure. A key part of that definition is software development. DevOps is about writing software. Like all software, DevOps software needs to be tested. Like all software, DevOps software is best tested in an automated fashion as part of a Continuous Integration (CI) development process. TestOps, the branch of DevOps devoted to automated testing, presents unique aspects and challenges as compared to testing normal application software.

This talk will describe how we test Acquia Cloud, a large PaaS and DevOps project, and what we have learned over several years of developing those tests.

Why Your Team Has Slowed Down, Why That's Worse than You Think, and How to Fix It

Then I have bad news for you: the slowdown you've experienced as your team has grown isn't just frustrating--it's hugely (but often invisibly) expensive, and maddeningly resistant to your attempts to reverse it. In this talk I'll zoom in on how and why engineering teams slow down. I'll approach the problem from an economic angle, demonstrating how well-meant but misguided attempts to manage costs in the face of slowdowns can death-spiral into worse delays with deadly (but hidden) economic consequences. I'll also discuss some strategies for smart investment that can break this vicious cycle and help your team start moving faster again (including tactics for that all-important job of selling those investments to the Powers that Be).
