Ari Zilka, Chief Products Office, Hortonworks
Ari has more than 20 years of software development expertise and a deep understanding of open source, enterprise software, and the execution required to build successful products. Ari was previously founder and CTO at Terracotta. Previously, Ari was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Accel Partners. Before joining Accel, Ari was the Chief Architect at Walmart.com, where he led the innovation and development of the company’s new engineering initiatives. Prior to Walmart.com, Ari worked as a consultant at Sapient and at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Ari holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering Computer Science as well as in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley.

Abstract:
Many IT professionals working in financial services have worked with virtualization technologies in depth for years. Yet CIOs of the Wall Street firms steer away from the word cloud because they don't really care about EC2 / AWS-level services. What they care about is provisioning. Platform as a Service is less important than Infrastructure as a Service to them and that is because Platforms are not fully baked or standardized within each firm. In this talk, we will explore the distaste for private and cloud. We will discuss what these banks are actually doing and how they are all actually doing cloud but nomenclature is holding them back from innovation. We will identify the necessary technical components, process changes, and organizational changes to execute on the cloud. In our criticism of clouds in Wall Street, we will focus not only on cloud tools themselves but cover end-to-end application development with continuous integration tools like Hudson, puppet / chef, and more all of which are needed for making the promise a reality.
