The Joy of Building Large Scale Systems

Although I often talk about microservices, my core passion is building software that extracts the most out of the hardware we have available. Many of the systems (databases, caches, queues, telemetry systems etc.) that we've grown up with and rely on are grounded on quite poor assumptions for the hardware of today. I want to challenge the buy attitude (picking software off the shelf) to all problems, by emphasising the capabilities of modern hardware and how much compute power we have at our fingertips.

This talk aims to revive the art and practice of building systems from core principles. I want the audience to come away with a renewed enthusiasm to spend their innovation tokens on building software, with a focus of how this can be done in practice within your teams and organisations, highlighting examples where companies are doing just that to great success.
