Track: High Performance Streaming Data
Location:
- Salon F
Day of week:
- Thursday
Designing, implementing and deploying complex computing systems that must maintain very high rates of real time data is part craft, part science and part art. These sophisticated systems bring to the foreground many areas of expertise: CPU architecture, storage, networking, and distributed algorithms, just to name a few. In this track some of the most interesting aspects of streaming data systems will be explored with plenty of real world experience, effective approaches and exciting new directions.

In this presentation we'll explore fast data streaming using Akka Streams—how to design robust transformation pipelines with built-in flow control, able to take advantage of multicore and going over networks. We'll discuss the traditional pitfalls and how they can be overcome as well as explore how we can build reusable pieces of pipeline logic that we can reuse—a smorgasbord of transformations.

Data velocity, variety, and volume aren’t trending downward and handling them in real-time is no longer the responsibility of a select few. Today, almost all systems need to be responsive, show results and effects immediately, and do so while handling ever increasing rates and complexity. There are a lot of viable techniques to handle these three challenges. And a lot of non-viable techniques. In this session, we will challenge some of the common myths and misconceptions about high...

Key contributor to Apache's Kafka & Samza
Since it was open sourced, Apache Kafka has been adopted very widely from web companies like Uber, Netflix, LinkedIn to more traditional enterprises like Cerner, Goldman Sachs and Cisco. At these companies, Kafka is used in a variety of ways - as a pipeline for collecting high-volume log data for load into Hadoop, a means for collecting operational metrics to feed monitoring and alerting applications, for low latency messaging use cases and to power near realtime stream processing.

Senior Software Engineer on the Netflix Edge team
Netflix customers stream billions of hours of content each month. The infrastructure to support this volume of traffic is large, distributed, and complex. To help operate an infrastructure, at this scale, requires new and innovative approaches to insights. The Edge Operational Intelligence Team is building a Reactive Stream Processing System, called Mantis, to power these next generation insight tools.
In this talk we describe Mantis, discuss challenges associated with designing for...
