HTML5 Adoption in Finance - Migration Strategies and Challenges

Abstract:

Financial desktop applications pose uniquechallenges to developers adopting HTML5. Power users, such as traders, expect native functionality not supported by HTML5, including real-time notifications, pop-up windows, keyboard control and Excel integration. Additionally, financial firms have significant investments in existing applications written in Java, C++, .NET, Flash and Silverlight, making complete rewrites in HTML5 impractical and creating a need for application interoperability.

In this session we will discuss some of the tools and real-world techniques being used by financial firms to deliver native user experience with HTML5, including the use
of Chromium. We will discuss approaches for achieving application interoperability and for implementing an incremental, step-wise approach to adopting HTML5

Mazy Dar

Mazy Dar is CEO of OpenFin. He is responsible for setting the overall direction and product strategy of the company. Prior to OpenFin, Mazy was at IntercontinentalExchange (ICE) where he led ICE's launch of CDS central clearing for buy-side market participants. Before ICE, Mazy served as Chief Strategy Officer of Creditex which was backed by JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank and TA Associates and acquired by ICE in 2008. He joined the firm in 2000 and was a key architect of Creditex's innovative products and services. He spearheaded the introduction of e-trading for the CDS market and launched auction platforms and processing services which are critical pieces of today's CDS market infrastructure. Earlier, Mazy worked in information technology at UBS. He attended Cornell University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and French Literature.

Asim Malik

Asim Malik is senior software developer at Risk Focus. His current interests lie in building large-scale HTML5 web applications. He is responsible for leading the overall HTML5 vision and strategy at Risk Focus. Over the last 13 years Asim has worked in the financial industry and has built user interface in most technologies available: Swing, JSP, WinForms, GWT and HTML5. He has also built several risk platforms for various financial instituitions and is equally as adept with server side message based systems and REST-ful web architectures using Java and Spring.
